Francis W. Dahl (1907–1973), a celebrated American cartoonist widely known as Boston's "Cartoon Laureate" for his long-running work in the Boston Herald and Boston Herald-Traveler.
The comic pokes satirical fun at a small snippet of trivia featured in the upper right corner: "A goose quill pen maker in Charlottesville still makes thousands of quill pens a year and sells them for two cents."
It follows a colonial-era writer trying to write with a quill pen at his desk. As he repeatedly ruins his quills or runs into trouble, he keeps having to look out the window or head to the post office ("April Mail — Eight Cents"). Ultimately, he tracks down a live goose out in a field to pluck a fresh feather directly from the source to finish his letter.
